hybrid cloud model is a combination of the public and private cloud, essentially taking the best of both and making it work for your business. Just like any other technology or advancement, cloud-based computing has its benefits and its drawbacks. The appropriate solution is probably not one-dimensional, implementing a hybrid cloud model could be the solution that takes advantage of all the cloud has to offer and how you can make it work best for your company needs.

Gartner predicts that 90 percent of organizations will adapt a hybrid infrastructure by 2020, if you are in the middle of a cloud migration or have an interest about moving your business to the cloud, here are four things you should be thinking about; Cost, Security, Capabilities, and Compatibility. Carefully considering each one of these variables can help lead to a successful adoption of or migration to the cloud.

  • Security: The private cloud allows you to keep your data onsite or on a virtual private network. However, implementing the private cloud capabilities makes sure it is safe and protected from any potential threats across all points. Both the private and public cloud have options to keep your systems safe. Whether it be the traditional the onsite firewall, the virtual private cloud or a blend of security measures. A hybrid cloud provides options to secure your data and that can align with your business needs.
  • Compatibility: It is crucial for the selected cloud model to be compatible with the applications your business already employs. Compatibility will make migration to the cloud that much easier. It should improve the end-user experience which should be seamless, transitional and allows for communication throughout. A well-structured design will lead to improved functionality not only at the end-user level but across your business.
  • Flexibility: You want your cloud model to be flexible with your work, in order to facilitate the integration and migration to the cloud. Your cloud migration shouldn’t stop business in the meantime either. Experienced architecture and intelligent design are crucial in creating a unified cloud option. The cloud should work for you, it should be scalable and agile. Allowing you to not only think about your needs for today but for tomorrow too.
  • Cost: Cost uncertainty and overspending can easily be associated with IT, but with a hybrid cloud model your business can take advantage of the public cloud by only paying for what you need or use. It can also eliminate the cost of having to refresh old hardware. Moving to a hybrid cloud model could assist in cost-containment, making your operational costs more predictable and manageable. To further manage the costs of cloud migration, think about having the right architectural design and implementation team.

The public and private cloud each have their own capabilities, blending the best of both may be the solution for you. Questions? Comments? Concerns? PCI is happy to consult, assist or perform your cloud migration and or adoption.
